The Tolomeo Design Project
|
The Tolomeo design is a result of a focused development project of Artemide. A project that in 1986 Artemide assigned to the talented world of famous industrial designer Michele De Lucchi, with the collaboration of designer Giancarlo Fassina, head of Artemide's R & D department.

A brief biography
|

|
Michele De Lucchi was born in 1951 at Ferrara and graduated in architecture
in Florence. During the period of radical and experimental architecture he was a
prominent figure in movements like Cavart, Alchimia and Memphis.
De Lucchi has designed products for Artemide, Dada Cucine, Kartell,
Matsushita, Mauser, Poltrona Frau and Olivetti, for whom he has been Director of
Design since 1992. He has elaborated various personal theories on the evolution
of the workplace and has developed experimental projects for Compaq Computers,
Philips, Siemens and Vitra.
His architectural designs have been mainly for office buildings, in Japan,
Germany and Italy. In 1999 he has appointed to renovate some of ENEL's (the
Italian Electricity Board's) power plants.
Many of his service interiors are in use at Deutsche Bank, Deutsche
Bundesbahn, Enel, Poste Italiane, Telecom Italia, Mandarina Duck, Banca Popolare
di Lodi and at other Italian and foreign banks.
He has designed buildings for public and private museums, as well as numerous
art and design exhibitions.
His professional work has always gone side-by-side with a personal
exploration of architecture, design, technology and crafts. In 1990 he set up
Produzione Privata, a small-scale concern through which Michele de Lucchi,
unsolicited by clients, designs products that are made using artisan techniques
and crafts.
His firm, aMDL Srl, has its offices in Milan and Rome.
The numerous international honours he has received include the following
prizes: Good design (Japan), Compasso d'Oro, Premio Smau, Office Design Elmu
(Italy), Deutsche Auswahl, IF Hanover, Design Plus, Roter Punkt, and Design Team
of the Year 1997 (Germany).
In 2000 he was made an Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana by President
Ciampi, for services to design and architecture.
In 2001 he has been nominated Professor for the Design and Art Faculty at
Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
|
Professional experience acquired with a company manufacturing calculating machines, and then a household appliance manufacturer.
1970 Joined Artemide with the task of structuring the technical design sector and, at the same time, organizing a department for the internal production of models and prototypes of the new products. Actively takes part in the definition of all Artemide's products and in particular works closely with Enzo Mari of the "Aggregate System" on design.
1983 Supervises the lighting plans for the Hayez exhibition at Palazzo Reale, Milan, for the "Design U.S.A." exhibition at the Sforzesco Castle and in the Aula Magna of the Academy of Brera.
1985 Works with the architect Marco Zanuso for the lighting of the new Teatro Fossati, Milan.
1986 Works with the architect Mario Bellini for the lighting on the Triennale exhibition of Milan for the exhibition "Il Progetto Domestico". With the architect Michele De Lucchi, designs the series of "Tolomeo" lamps for which he receives the "Golden Compass" award - ADI
1989 Over the past few years, he has worked on the design of a number of lamps belonging to the Artemide collection, including: Arcadia, the suspension lamp Tebe, Iole and Vesta for the Veart collection by Artemide and others for Litech such as the Trim system and Tessalo.
Giancarlo Fassina has also collaborated with designers Enzo Mari, Ernesto Gismondi, and Riccardo Blumer in the design and development of the following Artemide luminaires:
